Kinja'd!!!

Hey guys,

This is not regarding Top Gear, sorry. No, I post this because I require advice from the Council of Oppositelock.

Question:

I have a 1997 Dodge Minivan Sport (ohhhh) with 106K miles and the tranny went. It's currently in limp mode: 1st and 2nd. Anyway, no surprise there, Chryslers last good slushbox was the 727. Problem is, I just bought new tires for it and I have a few bucks invested in the thing. I have received quotes of over 2k, and frankly, as a college student I can't afford it. Also, I don't know what other problems I will run into after I solve this one. I just want to get rid of it and walk away with some cash. Mind you this is my second vehicle. So, OPPO, what would you do?

Thanks

Haha it's a '97... I dunno if that is worth putting 2k into.

What's your other vehicle?

Sell the parts that you can and scrap the rest.

If your tires are new sell them seperately from the rest of the car. You will be able to get a couple hundred bucks for them on craiglist (here in Canada we use something called kijiji, but the premise is the same).

If it needs tires to be scrapped, by whomever is taking it, just take whatever you can get for uber cheap, odds and ends and whatever else.

I should add, I once had a slush box, that wouldn't change out of first and second, and I got the governor gear replaced, and it fixed it.

Another college kid here, here's what I'd do. No one is going to want to buy a 1997 Dodge minivan with a busted transmission, and 2k is honestly more money than the car's worth. You could buy a decent replacement for that price. Maybe hop on the Dodge forums and start parting it out; I don't know how many people would want the parts, but it's a better shot than taking it to a scrapyard. And I mean part it out, like completely disassemble the thing. It'll probably take a long time, but parting out the van should net you anywhere from $500 to $1000, and since it is your second vehicle, anything you can get out of it is a bonus. Sorry for your problem, man, hope things work out for you.

Can't be worth investing into it at this point ..... to me at least with the uncertainty of when something else will go.

It's right on schedule. If you can find a trans guy who won't do *just* a rebuild but will use premo parts and will support you in running additive and frequent changes, that van will last quite a while longer yet. Other things might crop up (depending on engine), but most of the rest of those vans are solid... enough. Trouble is, finding someone who will do the trans for any cheaper than your quote, that may be difficult. Basically, that trans would have gone regardless what you'd done, but can be fixed competently - where the trouble sets in is the value of doing that vs. to a 2005 or newer Dodge van. There, you wouldn't be violating the "never put more into a car than it's worth" rule.

A lot depends on your access to The Things for pulling a trans. If you don't have them, you're not in good shape for getting anything back, as the rebuild would be of most value to you continuing to drive the car. Some dealerships may be willing to take it in weak trade, but I suspect most won't.

+1

This, followed by the forums; crawl the classifieds and put up a WTB post, they always have more spares than you think.

If all else fails, part it out.
